The cartoonification of Noah’s Ark

How such ‘delightful depictions’ downplay the Deluge—and Christianity

by    Noah's Ark (

A cartoon is a drawing in an unrealistic style, usually for satire, caricature or humour, and/or to appeal to children. ‘Cartoonification’ (aka ‘cartoonization’) is a recent colloquialism for the process of making something that’s real look ‘cartoonish’. I.e. drawing it in a (usually ridiculously) oversimplified, child-friendly or ‘delightful’ manner. Unfortunately, this has happened with Noah’s Ark, marker of one of the key events in biblical history. Most depictions of it have become thoroughly cartoonized!

With the Bible so clear on the size, purpose and shape of Noah’s Ark, its pervasive cartoonification is nothing short of amazing!

Today’s common version of the Ark portrays it as a ridiculously-shaped small houseboat. It is mostly only able to carry a handful of the more well-known animals, with giraffes’ heads poking out of windows, and elephants’ trunks hanging down the side. This rather pathetic-looking, definitely non-ocean-going boat is featured on children’s books, celebration cards, novelty ornaments, and more. It has been made into children’s toys and, most disappointingly, put onto Sunday school walls.

The real Noah’s Ark

The Bible in Genesis Chapter 6 very clearly sets out the dimensions, purpose and shape of Noah’s Ark. God ordered Noah to construct it 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 30 cubits high, with three levels, and a door on its side. All the different kinds of land animals and birds that were to come to Noah would find safety on board, along with his family, while God’s judgment came upon the earth in the form of a year-long, worldwide flood. Even using the smaller common cubit of c. 46 cm (18 in), Noah’s Ark would have been a massive vessel: L × W × H 137 × 23 × 13.7 metres (450 × 75 × 45 ft), more than adequate for its task.

The Ark was more a barge than a boat. Noah's Ark (

The Hebrew word used for the Ark of Noah (which only had to float, not travel like a ship) is tebah (תבה) meaning box-shaped or chest. It is not the Hebrew term used for boat or ship, e.g. ’onîah (אניה) in Proverbs 30:19, or tsî (צי) in Isaiah 33:21. Its Hebrew synonym is ’arôn (ארון), used for the Ark of the Covenant, another box-shaped item or chest, emphasizing the shape of Noah’s Ark.3 Both words are translated as kibōtos (κιβωτός) in the Greek of the Septuagint and the New Testament, showing they have an overlapping semantic range. And the NT never uses kibōtos for ship or boat.

This is a simple scaled Noah's Ark mailbox plan.

I have looked all over the web and did not find a scaled plan to make an Ark as a Visual Presentation of Creation that could be used also as a functional mailbox. So I made an example.

This example can be a wonderful testimony to God's grace in your front yard proclaiming the gospel to those who are lost and in darkness.

The Ark represents salvation. It did to Noah and his family and it is an example for us. Our ark of salvation is Jesus. Trust in him before the flood comes which is death. If you wait to trust in Jesus as your Saviour, the flood waters of death may consume you and then it will be eternally to late! The visual presentaion of the Ark near the your driveway entrance can be a visual testomony to the Grace of God toward Noah and his free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.  Modify the scale if you want to but make the Ark to scale. By doing so it becomes evident just how large Noah's Ark was that God told Noah to build and save his family from the worldwide flood.

Genesis 6:13-17

6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

6:15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

6:16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

6:17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.  ( (KJV) Bible    Evolution 101 (25 FREE Lessons Proving Evolution Is False)
